IM Injection
Steps
1. Wash hands.2. Prepare needed and equipment
1) Syringes
2) Ampoule or vial of medication
3) Solvent (e.g. normal saline or
sterile water)if needed.
4) Alcohol sponge
5) Dry sponge
3. Check medication card against label on
each ampoule or vial.
A-Prepare injection from ampoule
4. Tap tope of ampoule lightly andquickly with finger until fluid leaves the
neck.
5. Place small dry sponge around neck of
ampoule.
6. Snap neck quickly and firmly away
from hands.
7. Insert needle into center of ampoule
opening.
8. Aspirate medication by pulling back on
plunger.
9. Keep needle tip below surface of
liquid.
10. Expel air bubble by tap sides of
syringe, and draw back slightly and push
plunger upward to eject air.
11. Cover needle with sheath or change it
if indicated.
B-Prepare injection from vial
1. Remove metal cap of vial.2. Wipe off surface of rubber seal with
alcohol sponge, if vial had been used
previously.
3. Take syringe and remove needle cap.
Pull back on plunger to draw amount of
air into syringe equivalent to volume of
medication to be aspirated from vial.
4. Insert tip of needle into center of
rubber seal.
5. Inject air into vial
6. Invert vial while holding vial between
thumb and middle fingers
7. Keep tip of needle below fluid level.
8. After correct dose is obtained, expel air
bubble by tap sides of syringe
9. Inject solvent into vial.
10. Gently shaking the vial between
hands.
11. Aspirate desired dose.
I.M administration technique
1. Explain procedure to the patient.2. Keep patient’s privacy
3. Put patient in position appropriate
4. Clean site with alcohol sponge, using a
circular motion.
5. Remove needle sheath
6. Spread the skin in obese patient but in
thin patients collects the skin.
7. Quickly dart needle into the tissues at a
90-degree angle.
8. Aspirate by slowly pulling back on the
plunger to ensure whether the needle is
not in a blood vessel.
9.If no blood is aspirated, inject
medication slowly.
10.Remove needle quickly.
11. Press the site with a dry sponge.
12. Assist patient to a comfort position.
13. Wash hands.
