Measuring blood pressure

Steps

1. Hand washing.
2.Wear gloves
3.Prepared equipment
 Pressure device
 Stethoscope
 Alcohol
 Sponge of cotton
4. Explain procedure to the patient.
5. Position the patient's arm at heart level
6. Locate the brachial pulse.
7. Snugly apply the cuff with the center of
the bladder over the patient's brachial
artery, 1 to 2 inches above the antecubital
fossa. Do not apply the cuff over the
patient's clothes.

8.For a palpatory reading:

a. Palpate the patient's radial artery
b. Pump the cuff
c. Slowly deflate the cuff and identify the
point at which you feel the pulse return.

9.For an auscultatory reading:

a. Clean the earpieces stethoscope with
alcohol
b. Apply the stethoscope firmly over the
patient's brachial artery.
c. Close the valve, and inflate the cuff
rapidly.
d. Deflate the cuff by slowly opening the
valve.
e. Note when you hear the first beat heard.
f. Note the last beat heard.
g. remove the cuff and it from the patient's
arm.
10.Clean the stethoscope with alcohol.
11.Wash hands.
12.Record the results.
